Voting reform is a critical issue for Overseas Americans as well as the USA as a country. The 2000 and 2004 presidential elections revealed dramatic problems with the national election system, including:

bullet

Lack of information on overseas voter registration

bullet

The use of voter suppression and other partisan tactics

bullet

Documented problems with electronic voting machines

bullet

Lack of access by overseas voters to the FVAP website

bullet

Lack of information given by US Embassies to US citizens

A group of NGOs, including Common Cause, Demos, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights under Law, the Mexican-American Defense and Education Fund, the National Voting Rights Institute and the People for the American Way recently issued a joint statement on voting reform in Ohio, which illustrates many of the continuing problems.

HELADA encourages every US citizen to register to vote. Please visit our Voter Registration page for more information.
