The U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003 did enormous damage to the image in the United States in Greece, as around the world.  Many HELADA members joined in the anti-war protests.  Brady Kiesling wrote an article in the New York Review of Books describing the scene in Athens then. In 2005, Greek anger has subsided, mostly because they see that America has paid hugely in lives and treasure for its arrogance.  Still, restoring Iraq to a state no worse than America found it in 2003 remains an unsolved political and moral problem.

The most balanced source for to-the-minute information on Iraq is Juan Cole's blog, "Informed Comment."  Professor Cole is no apologist for Saddam Hussein but a genuine expert on Iraq and the Middle East, one of the experts the Bush Administration refused to consult before dismantling a massively troubled country.

IRAQ: The Ethics of Exit

In this Foreign Policy Roundtable, five leading experts argue over what it
will take for the United States to bid Iraq a proper farewell. These essays
are drawn from a conference by the University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute
for International Peace Studies, Fordham University's Center for Religion
and Culture, and the Fourth Freedom Forum.
