TAKEBACKTHEFLAG

Because extremists wave the American flag as a symbol of militarism and anti-foreign sentiment, Liberals have become embarrassed to wave it themselves. As Royce Carlson notes on the 'Give Us Back' page, you might still display the flag, but who's to know you're waving it to express America's progressive ideals?

HELADA members in Greece, distanced from "official America" by the politics of the Bush Administration, through this project have been getting close to our flag again. For us it represents the ideals we were raised with -- free speech, social justice, respect for the universal rights of all mankind, and a host of other concepts we think our Founding Fathers had in mind when they embarked on the American experiment.

The Flag, the Country, is ours, too. And here we play with the Flag, hold it fondly, treat it as a friend, transmute its colors to express our highest aspirations.

Guide us out of the Night

God bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her and guide her,
Through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home.
