TAKEBACKTHEFLAG

The Making of TAKEBACKTHEFLAG - 11 June, 2005

It started as an innocent enough comment: 'Hey, the Rhamnous Beach Clean-Up was great! We should do something else like that. You know, combine politics with a bit of fun.'

It's a tough call. Some in HELADA want more serious political debate, more activism. Others like social solidarity-building with a purpose. HELADA is looking for a happy medium.

And then, Christine shoots from the hip, 'How about taking back the flag?' She started mentioning other efforts like the Gates, like the wonderful "Sorry Everybody" graphic that went round the world after the Iraq invasion. And then, like Topsy, the idea just grew.

It could be electronic; it could be paper and paste. It could be graphic art; some would offer words. It could be our creativity; friends and kindred spirits might contribute. And so it grew.

It seemed that 14 June, Flag Day, was an appropriate target. And please note the web layout ran just a tad over that goal. But it's up. And on the way to publishing, a small gathering was arranged at Diane's house for those who might feel inspired but needed a bit of support, encouragement, and an extra set of thumbs.

Inspiring milieu
A bluff overlooking the Evia channel. Good company, pesto, cheeses and little breads.
Hard to return to the house and contemplate the work at hand.

Back to school
A lot of bad stars fell to the wayside before the 5-points came out evenly. Somehow, being 'back in school' helped bring out the positive feelings we develop about the flag as children.

Ribbons
A superb idea. But they tend not to hold still. Patience is premium.

Duct Tape
Stickier than ribbons, but, on the other hand,
if you leave the 'ec' out of 'insecurity' ...

Sharing the day: Christine Counelis (the brains behind), Diane Katsiaficas (studio/artist-mentor),  Edward Harris, Constance Zavos, Aileen Ajootian, Nancy Bookides, Alicia Coriolano, Nick Pournaras, Stephanie Van D'elden, Joan Weaver, Karen Lee.
